Solar Energy
Solar energy is a major contributor to on-site energy generation across our health system. Implementing solar panels on rooftops and open spaces allows us to take advantage of abundant sunlight. This initiative supports our commitment to sustainability and enhances energy independence.
A regional leader in solar energy
Hundreds of ground- and roof-mount solar photovoltaic panels are installed at 17 locations across Gundersen Health System, making us one of the largest private owners of solar energy in the tri-state area. By reducing our energy needs and carbon emissions, we’re lowering the cost of healthcare while improving the health of our communities for generations to come.

Solar supports site-based energy independence
We strive for net-zero energy use at all newly constructed buildings. Solar energy is a major contributor to our site-based energy independence goal. For example, the 77,000-square-foot Gundersen Tomah Clinic features 737 solar photovoltaic panels capable of producing 240 kilowatts of energy. This solar system contributes about 30% of the building’s annual power needs.
