Sustainability
Our health system has set the standard for sustainability—from innovative programs to cutting-edge renewable energy projects. We are committed to minimizing the cost of providing healthcare while improving the health of the world around us. These efforts embody our commitment to the environment, creating a lasting impact that benefits both the planet and future generations.
Sustainability in action
We are a proud leader in healthcare sustainability, becoming the first known health system in the nation to achieve energy independence in 2014. Our commitment to efficiency and renewable energy encompasses a holistic approach to wellness that benefits both people and the planet. By the end of 2027, we aim to use half the energy a health system of our size would typically use. All new buildings will have net zero energy usage or site-based energy independence. By prioritizing eco-friendly practices, we reduce our environmental footprint, lower energy costs and enhance patient care while creating a healthier future for all.

Renewable energy
We are committed to creating a more inheritable world by leveraging renewable energy. Since the inception of our sustainability efforts, we have implemented nearly a dozen renewable energy projects. In 2024 alone, we were able to save $5.7 million in energy costs. By investing in cutting-edge technologies and fostering partnerships with local organizations, we aim to expand our impact and inspire others to join us in this critical mission.
Energy conservation
Healthcare is the second largest commercial energy user in the United States. That's why we adopted energy-efficient strategies to reduce our energy use and dependence on fossil fuels. As the only health system to be invited to the Paris Climate Accord, we are passionate about reducing the release of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) into the atmosphere, which can contribute to global warming and poor air quality.

Recycling
Our recycling programs continue to grow—from recycling paper and cardboard to plastic, blue wrap, batteries, X-ray film, lead vests, gloves, plastic sensors and more. We have an impressive single-stream recycling system to simplify the process and reduce the need for multiple containers. Through these initiatives, we demonstrate that environmental responsibility and economic efficiency go hand in hand and set the standard for sustainability in healthcare.
Recognitions and achievements in climate change
Our changing climate remains a critical challenge. That's why we’ve implemented eco-friendly practices over the years—proving there are sustainable approaches to energy use that can lower costs while reducing our carbon footprint and improving the health of the communities for future generations. Browse some of our noteworthy accomplishments.
Energy independence
In October 2014, we became the first known health system in the nation to achieve energy independence by producing more energy than we consumed.
