Internal Medicine Residency Application

We’re looking for applicants who want a program that offers autonomy and flexibility in a collaborative and supportive environment. If that sounds like you, apply today.

Apply now via ERAS

How to apply

We accept and review residency applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) only. We accept applications in mid-September through November 1. Interviews will be virtual.

Our program participates in the supplemental ERAS application offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program. You must complete the MyERAS application, and participation in the supplemental ERAS application is optional.

While we preferentially review applications from those who signal our program, we also consider applicants who do not signal us. We also participate in the couples match through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Application requirements

When you apply through ERAS, include:

  • Your personal statement
  • Medical school transcript
  • MyERAS application form
  • 3 letters of recommendation, 2 of which must be from internal medicine or internal medicine subspecialties

Eligibility

You can apply for our residency after you pass USMLE or COMLEX Step 1. You’re eligible for our program if you finished medical school within the past 2 years or were engaged in meaningful clinical or research experience in the interim.

We only review applications of individuals who have passed the USMLE or COMLEX exams on their first attempt.

International medical graduates

If you graduated medical school outside of the U.S., you must also be ECFMG certified at the start of your residency. U.S. clinical experience is not mandatory.

Our institutional policy, which values diversity and inclusiveness, sponsors H1 and J1 visas. We are exempt from the H1 cap.

We do not offer observerships/externships for international medical graduates unless you have already been accepted into the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Gundersen Health System.
