Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship

Our fellowship prepares hematology-oncology fellows for successful, independent careers. We emphasize the development of outstanding patient care skills and encourage participation in clinical research, quality improvement and safety projects, and community involvement.

How to apply

Overview

Our Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship prepares physicians to deliver outstanding patient care in the fields of hematology and oncology. The flexibility of our curriculum allows you to chart your own path to success, with the assistance of mentors who know you and care about your needs.

Here, you will develop the confidence and skills necessary to provide outstanding care for patients, as well as the ability to thrive in an academic or community setting. We encourage active participation in all aspects of the program — from core rotations and clinical research to quality improvement and safety projects. You will leave the program not only with an understanding of how to work effectively in a system but also what it means to be a part of a community.

How to apply

We are looking for applicants who desire a program that offers patient ownership in a collaborative and supportive environment. If that sounds like you, learn more about the program requirements and interview process, and apply through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).

A warm welcome from our program director

What sets our program apart?

Our faculty works very hard to foster an exceptional learning environment and we are proud to offer the following:

  • Two continuity clinics each week: one focused on hematologic illnesses and one in solid organ malignancies
  • A sense of ownership and responsibility for your own patient panel
  • Support staff and patient populations that are identical to those of our attending physicians, including partnerships with associate-level providers
  • The Gundersen Research Institute team including free access to statisticians with extensive experience in large database research (NCDB, SEER, NIS), your own academic research assistant, opportunities for basic science and translational research experiences, and access to clinical trials and cooperative groups

I chose Gundersen because of its unique combination of academia with community care. I knew my training here would not only prepare me for my career in hematology/oncology, but also for caring for patients in a rural setting.
