Life brings emergencies, large and small. The Gundersen Tri-County Emergency & Urgent Care team is equipped and ready to care for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in our Level IV Trauma Center. If you have a non-emergent condition but need our care now, we'll take care of you in our walk-in Urgent Care.

Facility charges
All services at Gundersen Tri-County Emergency and Urgent Care are departments of Gundersen Tri-County Hospital. Depending on your health insurance, this hospital-based clinic may charge a separate facility fee, which might result in higher out-of-pocket expense. Seamless emergency care
As a designated Level IV Trauma Center, our specially trained physicians and nursing staff have immediate access to life-saving equipment and protocols when minutes matter. If you need more specialized care, we’ll stabilize and safely transport you by ambulance or helicopter to a specialty care facility. Any test results or vital health information will be sent to the receiving hospital so advanced planning can be started before your arrival.
Ambulance service

Gundersen Tri-County Ambulance is headquartered at Gundersen Tri-County Hospital and Clinics in Whitehall. The ambulance serves eight municipalities with a population of more than 7,500 people and surrounding townships. With 16 volunteer EMTs, Tri-County Ambulance is an Advanced Life Support (ALS) service. This allows Gundersen Tri-County EMTs to give additional drugs and start IVs, all in close coordination with Gundersen Tri-County Hospital Emergency Department physicians. It also is a 911 response service, meaning it covers the communities and surrounding townships (mentioned above) 24 hours every day.
Air transport
The Gundersen AIR helicopter can be airborne within minutes to reach critically ill patients at Gundersen Tri-County Hospital and transport them to Gundersen’s Level II Trauma Center in La Crosse. Any test results or vital health information is sent to La Crosse so advanced planning can be started before the patient’s arrival.
Heart attack
When a patient suffering from a heart attack arrives at Gundersen Tri-County Emergency Room, our medical team provides crucial immediate care. We use a set of protocols called Priority One. If needed, staff prepares the patient for helicopter transport to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Within 90 minutes, the patient is receiving life-saving coronary artery balloon angioplasty in La Crosse.
Stroke
When treating a patient with stroke symptoms, we use a set of protocols called Stroke Alert. Our medical staff provides crucial immediate care together with specialists at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. This includes administering clot-busting medication that can improve outcomes if given within 4½ hours of the start of symptoms.
