General Surgery Residency Application
We accept 4 surgeons into our program each year, for a total of 20 residents in our 5-year program.
How to apply
We are looking for residents who want broad general surgery training that will prepare them for practice in rural, urban or global environments, or prepare them for a subspecialty fellowship, if desired. If that is you, apply through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by October 1.
Application requirements
When you apply through ERAS, include:
- A personal statement
- Your medical school transcript
- Dean's letter (or equivalent)
- Results of USMLE standardized tests; all in-service exams; ECFMG certificate (IMG applicants)
- Three recommendation letters from physicians, preferably from surgeons you’ve worked alongside. If you graduated from an international medical school, the letters should address your clinical experience in the U.S.
Interview
We will extend a virtual interview offer to our top candidates after a holistic review of applications. Candidates can expect their interview on a Wednesday between October and January. Candidates will join a virtual social hour with our residents the evening before the interview.
Eligibility
You are eligible to apply for our residency if you:
- Speak and write English
- Completed visa paperwork and fees, if applicable
- Graduated from medical school within the last 2 years
- Passed USMLE exam(s) on the first attempt
- Have a minimum of 1 year of U.S. direct patient care experience. For U.S. medical students, your clinical rotations during medical school will meet this requirement.
