Emplify Health honored for advances in care experience using AI

Monday, April 14, 2025

Emplify Health is making a name for itself nationally by using technology to enhance patient care and staff experience. For those efforts, the health system has been recognized by Foundry’s CIO as a 2025 CIO 100 Award winner, highlighting its groundbreaking use of AI and automation. This recognition features the organization's commitment to thoughtfully using technology to improve patient care and experience and operational efficiency.

"At Emplify Health, we are committed to transforming care by building our own skills and investing in AI solutions that support our mission," says Praveen Chopra, Chief Digital & Information Officer. "Our focus is on liberating innovation at the frontlines by enhancing AI literacy and empowering our staff with the right tools and technologies to use Artificial Intelligence and automation responsibly. This improves experiences, boosts productivity, and simplifies processes”

At the heart of Emplify Health's innovation is Emplify AI, a secure generative AI platform that automates various tasks, significantly reducing the administrative burden on staff. One of the most notable applications of Emplify AI is in the Cancer BioBank, where it automates the labor-intensive process of specimen classification. This automation has saved over 250 staff hours annually, allowing these valuable resources to be reallocated to higher-level functions.

“Our AI success to date is driven by a solid governance framework involving clinical and operational leaders to ensure responsible and strategic deployment of AI technology,” says Krister Mattson, Emplify Health Vice President of Enterprise Analytics and Data Sciences. “This framework balances moral and ethical considerations, ensures data security, and prioritizes human-centric and inclusive AI products.”

Emplify Health has also implemented AI-driven tools to manage patient advice messages. Automated draft responses have received positive feedback from patients and have reduced the workload on clinicians, allowing them to focus more on patient interactions in the exam room. An algorithm for maintaining accurate patient panels helps manage primary care practices more effectively and encourages patients to return to care.

“One of our main goals is to elevate the ‘human voice,’” shares Scott Rathgaber, MD, Emplify Health Chief Executive Officer. “Clinician, nurse and cross-functional team feedback has been key to developing and using AI technology for efficiency and for intelligent, professional, compassionate processes and messages to enhance patient interactions and improve turnaround time for a variety of services.”

Executives from the winning companies will be recognized at the CIO 100 Symposium & Awards Aug. 11-13 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
