At Gundersen, our volunteers are love in motion—and an integral part of our healthcare team. Whether you wish to explore a health career, want to become better connected to the community or yearn to stay active in retirement, we have opportunities for you.
Student Volunteer Program, ages 16+
The student program is made up of three terms:
- Spring term: January – April
- Summer term: May – August
- Fall term: September – December
Student applications must be submitted by the following dates:
- Spring term: December 1
- Summer term: April 1
- Fall term: August 1
To ensure the best experience for our patients, volunteers and staff, we have established the following requirements for students:
- You must consider school, work and activity schedules to ensure you are able to commit to a minimum of one volunteer shift each week for a minimum of 12 weeks.
- Space is limited and placement is based on department needs and applicant skills, interest, experience and availability. Students will be accepted based on the number of volunteer opportunities available.
- Our patients and staff depend on you. After two no-call, no-shows or unexcused absences, you will be removed from the volunteer program.
- Volunteers who successfully complete a full term will receive priority placement when returning for additional terms. Students must inform Volunteer Services staff of their intention to return.
- Students under the age of 18 will require parental consent to volunteer.
Adult Volunteer Program
To ensure the best experience for our patients, volunteers and staff, we have established the following program requirements:
- Adult volunteers must be at least 18 years old and able to commit to volunteering on a regular basis.
- Space is limited and placement is based on department needs and applicant skills, interest, experience and availability.
- Our patients and staff depend on you. After two no-call, no-shows or unexcused absences, you will be removed from the volunteer program.

Becoming a volunteer
After you submit your online interest form, Volunteer Services will contact you. If you are accepted into the program, you must successfully complete these onboarding requirements before volunteering:
- Background check
- Volunteer health screening, including immunization review, TB test and seasonal flu vaccination
- New volunteer orientation
- Department-specific training
